Where Did My Interest Start

When I was young, we spent our weekends in Port Stanley sailing. We would travel back to our home in St. Thomas but often we would stop at a small grocery store called “Gifford’s” to pick up whatever supplies we might need. While there, I would often check out the latest issue of Popular Science and often buy it to read interesting articles about technology.

One day, in the fall of 1982, I looked at the magazine rack and saw a headline which read World’s First $100 Computer. I instantly bought that issue and read the article. I knew I had to buy this computer. I had about $100 Canadian in my bank account and started talking to my mom and dad about using it to buy the Timex Sinclair 1000.

It was a tiny thing which came with 2K of memory (which didn’t mean anything to me at the time but 2048 seemed like a pretty big number to me) and would hook up to our TV just like our Atari 2600. But, I was about to learn about exchange rates, import duties and taxes. After talking to my parents, it was clear that the money in my bank account wasn’t going to be enough to buy this machine.

But, my dad had a better idea…

Back To Work

When Samantha arrived early, my time off work started early also. So, I started my time off on August 28th. The original plan was to go back to work on September 17th. But, Samantha arrived early and the plan didn’t quite work out. I had some more work I needed to do before a September 15th deadline. Instead, I worked during some afternoons and evenings during the week of the 10th. On the 13th and 14th, I went in during the afternoon while Matthew was away at school.

But, this past week I have been back at work full-time. More or less anyways. It has been a bit difficult getting up in the morning because of the late night feedings so I have been rolling in around 10:00. Next week I will do better, hopefully…

Cynthia is managing fine during the day though while I am away at work. But everything has kept us all very busy, as my lateness in getting all of this content online shows.

Samantha Is One Week Old

P1050610.JPGWe have some good news. After one week, Samantha had reached 5 pounds 11 ounces. So, she recovered back to her birth weight and then some. Also, she gained 11 onces over the Labour Day Weekend. The doctor and ourselves are no longer concerned about her weight.

The family is adjusting well to the new arrival. As the new pictures show, Matthew is very excited to have a baby sister and Cynthia and I are a bit tired but doing fine.

Samantha Comes Home

P1050608.JPGYesterday, Samantha and Cynthia were both given a clean bill of health and were discharged from the hospital. Matthew was spending the day at his friend Dhruv’s house (thanks Yashi for helping us) and we called him on the way home. We gave him the choice to play with his friend a bit longer or to come home with mom and his new sister. He didn’t think very long about that and soon enough he was in the car with us. So, by early afternoon, we had the whole family back at home. There are some pictures and a video from that experience getting her home.

That almost didn’t happen though. Samantha was still losing weight fairly rapidly yesterday and there were some concerns about that. She had lost over 8% of her birth weight in those three days and the last 12 hours still showed she was dropping. We had a doctor appointment for her the next day (which is now today) so the hospital agreed that as long as she was going to the doctor the next day and she was being weighed, she could go home.

Last night was tough. Samantha would breast feed for a long time (40 minutes or more) and then she would pass out exhausted. I would try to put her to sleep but dressing her and moving her would wake her up. Then, she would just act very hungry again and it would all seem to start over. It was a long night but we got through it and made it to the appointment with the doctor.

There, her weight was shown to be 5 pounds even which meant she had now lost 10% of her birth weight. We had already contacted a lactation consultant and the doctor suggested that we follow up with that and supplement with formula if we have to. The consultant was very good. She showed that Samantha was having to work extra hard for her meal and taught us how to make it easier. Also, she wanted us to supplement with pumped breast milk or formula.

So, that is what we are doing. After the last two feedings, Samantha went to bed just as tired as before. But now, it is clear she is just full and contented, not exhausted. And she is sleeping much better between feedings. We have the long weekend to get through without much support but thankfully it seems we have gotten the help we needed and I think her weight will be improving very soon.

Samantha and Cynthia Doing Fine

P1050601.JPGAfter a second day in the hospital, both mother and baby are doing great. Samantha has started eating regularly and still seems pretty quiet, even when hungry. Cynthia is still recovering but coming along great.

Both were moved to a private room today and I think they both like a quieter although smaller room. I tried to take a video of Samantha using the digital camera but must have messed up somehow because it was not on the camera when I connected it to the computer. Perhaps later we will get a video of her online.

We had a visit from Dale and Crystal today at the hospital. Crystal helped Cynthia while Dale kept me company while I got some dinner at the hospital cafeteria. If you check out the pictures from today, you will find a picture of Crystal holding Samantha also.

So, everything is going very well and it seems they may be coming home as soon as tomorrow.

Welcome Samantha!

P1050577.JPGArriving three days earlier than expected, Samantha Christine Rand arrived at 10:18 PM August 27th, 2007. She weighed 5 pounds 8 ounces and is doing very well. Cynthia is recovering well also and it appears that they are both well on track to being released from the hospital on Thursday or Friday.

Check out the pictures here of her. The pictures show one right after she was born to ones taken almost 24 hours later when Matthew and her Aunt Alison met her for the first time. I am sure we will be publishing more pictures here soon.

So pass on the word that there is a new Rand in the world. I will have to update the picture on the banner of this webpage to reflect that.
